Limitations

- If several near-black steps merge, record the behavior and check RGB range, brightness, contrast, color profile and ambient light before adjusting the display.
- Which transfer curve should I use as reference?
- sRGB has its own segmented transfer function, often approximated as gamma 2.2. Video workflows may use BT.1886; the target depends on the delivery standard and viewing environment.
Technical Methodology & Display Science
Transfer functions relate digital code values to luminance. sRGB is segmented rather than an exact single power law; BT.1886 defines a reference response that accounts for display conditions.
An 8-bit ramp has codes from 0 to 255, but color management, composition, framebuffer depth, GPU and panel processing can transform the physical output. This page supports observation, not colorimetric validation.
Text rendering depends on the operating system, browser, scaling and subpixel geometry. Comparing targets may reveal visible fringing without automatically identifying panel layout or the correct compensation.
